Remembering Jurek Wójcik

........Dear Friends, I cannot resist adding a few words about my Dear Friend of blessed memory, Jurek Wójcik.

We started out at the Power Engineering Technical School, the so-called "Akademia Loretańska", and for five years we shared a school desk. I was the first of us two to play the guitar, from the age of, let us say, 12, but Jurek, always curious and artistically inclined, quickly took to the guitar as well and the two of us often practised and listened to music, especially from Radio Luxembourg, and that is probably how it began.

In short, Jurek, a born genius with a perfect "ear", did not last long as an electrical technician after receiving his diploma. He was self-taught in both the guitar and the English language, so he took up English Studies at the Jagiellonian University. There he gained his master's degree with a thesis on Bob Dylan.

He also practised karate and, as the first in Europe !.. He won a brown belt as a Kyokushinkai karateka, receiving that grade of distinction from a master in the Netherlands. Later he ran a karate school of his own in Kraków. It is a wonder that he often played the guitar with dislocated fingers.

Jurek's story and achievements are well known to his many friends, but the fact that deserves to be stressed is that he was a man who attained perfection in so many very different fields, and that shows what fine and gifted, what valuable people devoted their talent to the development of music not only in Kraków-Nowa Huta but in Poland as well.

Our city is a true cradle of learning, artistry and progress in so many areas of life. Let us feel proud and privileged that we live here and were active in learning and in the arts. Please look up the wonderful obituary written for Jurek Wójcik by yet another phenomenon of our times, Mr Andrzej Keyha.

He took part in the theatrical happenings (for that is what their performances must be called) of Zdrój Jana and was our dear friend.

There are no summings-up; the work of creating culture goes on, and successive generations of wonderful people continue to take part in it.

But the most important thing in all of this was always the music, so let us listen to the tracks attached to this website, both The Shadows as performed by Ryszardy and the music of Zdrój Jana, true forerunners of the avant-garde music of the 21st century, played in the last one.

To Ryszard Szczudłowski I once again offer the accolades he is due for running the website RYSZARDY I INNI.

Greetings to All, Wiesław Szerla, once of BEZIMIENNI....
